Session #1: Introduction to school avoidance and strategies to support children and youth get back to school successfully
Children, teens and their families have had big changes in lifestyle and routines in response to COVID-19, and many children will not have set foot in a school for 6 months. Socializing, sleep, and daily living have drastically changed and are about to change again with a proposed return to in-person school. This change compounds existing anxiety for children and families, particularly those who may have already been struggling with school-related anxiety or avoidance.
As providers, families will be looking to you for guidance, support and answers on how to have a fresh start, increase school willingness and decrease anxiety. This webinar series will provide practical, hands on tools you can use in your practice today!

Learning Objectives
1. Recognize school avoidance and common comorbidities.
2. Understand COVID-19-related changes and school transitions.
3. Assess for school anxiety/avoidance effectively in order to optimise management.
4. Advise families on routine setting prior to return to school.
5. Understand the three-pronged approach: individual supports for children and youth, parental behavioural strategies, and school consultation.
6. Support families to set achievable goals as they navigate the transition back to school.
